She Ain't Heavy, She's My Mother

According to mum’s passport she will turn 101 on 28 October 2025. But according to the records from the Lodz Ghetto, she is about to celebrate 102. Despite living through the dark years of war and losing all her family, she, together with dad, built a rich and vibrant life.

After dad passed away in 2016, mum decided to move in with me. Instead of feeling burdened, I saw this move as a gift — an opportunity to care for her and share these years together.

These posts capture that precious time: mum living in my ‘share home’ with family members, housemates and guests who surrounded her with love, support, and appreciation.

I wanted to documents these years with mum -- to offer a glimpse into the daily joys and challenges of caring for a loved one with dementia, and into the often-unseen world of the very old.

In 2022, after five priceless years with us, mum began to have more and more falls, and finally moved into the aged care facility across the road. I was very sad that I could no longer care for her at home.

Yet even in her smaller, more contained world, she remains content, especially when her family is close by.

I have also included stories from mum's earlier life. They remind us that she has not always been old, and are a tribute to her spirit and the remarkable life she has lived.
