This project is divided into 5 parts:

Making My Man

My Man in Thailand

My Man in Melbourne

My Man at a Hippy Festival

Tea for Two

I have always dreamed of sharing my life with someone who fulfilled me physically, emotionally and spiritually. Finding this person wasn't easy, so I decided to create my own inanimate one.

I made ‘Som Chai’ not only as a companion, but also as a way of dealing with family and friends’ expectations of me. They believed I would feel more fulfilled and content once I was partnered.

While making Som Chai, I wondered: How much do we define ourselves through our partner?  Does our partner reflect our self-worth?  How much importance do we place on external factors like looks, wealth or status? Also, is it possible for an inanimate doll-man, who is always there for you, to replace the need for a flesh and blood human-man?

After I made Som Chai, I realised I didn’t need a real man anymore. My friends got the message, and stopped persuading me to meet someone.

I could now finally relax. I was no longer a wall-flower. Som Chai fulfilled all my needs and insecurities: he travelled to exotic countries with me, danced with me at weddings and parties, listened to my issues and made me feel whole.
