Mum caught pneumonia a few weeks ago. She sounded terrible, her breathing short and raspy.  She was listless, not eating, barely drinking. I was sure that was it. I’ve been sure before, many times. Probably since she first fell down the front stairs five years ago and broke six ribs. And then again three years ago when she broke her hip and leg. And countless times in between. I’ve even shortened my trips to see grandkids in Israel to a maximum of three weeks— such short visits compared to the many months I used to spend there.

And yet, somehow, my household keeps ticking along. WWOOFers still write, introducing themselves, hoping I’ll take them on. Ayaka, a lovely Japanese girl,  arrived two weeks ago. I was craving a few hours of respite, so I took her to mum’s and explained how she could help.

She sent me videos of them together. I was amazed watching how playful she was with mum - folding origami swans, showing her drawings.

And, lo and behold, mum came back to life.

That was the most surprising of all.
