My name is Marysia Kohn. I am a Holocaust survivor. I light this candle in memory of my mother - Cecilia (Cela) Messing Wojdyslawska, born in 1896 and my father Jakob Wojdyslawski, born in 1894.
My father was a talented designer and tailor, he opened an exclusive salon in town and was in such high demand that he could choose his clients, mostly attractive women for whom he made haute couture gowns. He died of hunger in the Lodz Ghetto in 1942.
My mother worked as a manageress of one of the first clothing factories in Poland which exported its clothes to western Europe. She perished at Auschwitz in 1944.
This year commemorates the 80th Anniversary of the Liquidation of the Lodz Ghetto (1944-2024). There are not many Holocaust survivors alive today. Now it is up to us, the next generations, to continue their legacy and keep their memory alive.
Two years ago mum, as a survivor of the Lodz Ghetto and the Holocaust, was honoured to light a candle in memory of her parents, extended family and all those that were murdered due to ignorance and biased hatred.
This year - her 100th or 101st year - she has become too frail to attend.
But even so, she still is a ball of love and blesses us all every day ❤️
